Meet Our Dentist

Hi, my name is Dr. Susan Polis. I have been involved with dentistry since 1980 in the State of Alaska. I graduated from the University of Minnesota in Dental Hygiene that year and immediately moved to Alaska and began providing preventive care in many areas such as Anchorage, Barrow, Yakitat, Seward, Valdez, Dutch Harbor, King Cove, Sand Point and Glennallen. I love Alaska and eventually found a full-time position in Homer, AK, where I worked for 5 years as a registered Dental Hygienist.

In 1997, I graduated with a Doctorate in Dental Surgery from Loma Linda University School in Loma Linda, California.

Since being a dentist, I have owned practices in Barrow for 25 years, Yakutat for 6 years, and Homer for 17 years. I now spend most of my time in Homer where I live. I absolutely love the field of dentistry and helping people to achieve their dream smiles.

As a member of the American Dental Society, Alaska Dental Society, and Academy of General Dentistry, I keep up with all the newest innovations in the field. I recently underwent training at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies in neuromuscular, aesthetic and implant dentistry and am committed to providing excellent, caring dentistry.

In my spare time, I enjoy fishing, boating, and bowling. I have been an avid skier, both in snow and water, most of my life, and enjoy camping and winter snow machine trips as well.

My proudest achievement is my ability to provide friendly and quality dental care to my patients in Homer. I have the most EXCELLENT dental team of oral hygienists and support staff!

    Skya was born and raised in Homer, AK, and graduated from high school in 2004.a She then proceeded to get bachelor's degree in heath ecology from the University of Nevada Reno. After graduation, she worked for Preventive Dental Services as a dental assistant and then went back to school to become an oral hygienist. Then she received a bachelor's degree in science of dental hygiene in Orem, UT. At her graduation ceremony, she was awarded the Golden Scaler award. In her spare time she enjoys fishing in Alaska, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

    Hi, I am Amber, one of the hygienists here at Preventive Dental.   I graduated from the University of Anchorage Alaska Dental Hygiene Program in 2018 and I am a licensed in both Alaska and Hawaii.  I love working with people and became a dental hygienist to connect and contribute to my community.  As a hygienist I truly enjoy helping people along their way to being healthy and happy.

    I grew up here in Alaska and have always loved the ocean.  I spent my school years deck handing on commercial fishing boats, eventually meeting my husband and buying fishing operations of our own.  I still spend my summers chasing salmon, and when the season is over I trade in my rain gear for scrubs. 

    On my free time you would most likely find me back at the beach, out chasing waves, and surfing.

    My name is Jen and I was born and raised in Alaska. I graduated from Homer High in 2007, I then went to UAF to get my certificate in dental assisting. When I moved back to Homer in 2009 I started working for Preventive Dental Services.  I’ve enjoyed working here because every day is different and I’m continually learning. During my free time I enjoy spending time with family, fishing, camping and beach combing.

    Maria moved to Homer in 2011 from Alberta, Canada where she was born and raised in a small farming town. She joined our dental team in June of 2021, taking over the Insurance & Finance Coordinator position, and has since been promoted to Office Manager. With over 3 years medical experience, Maria has been a great asset to the organization and is thrilled to add Dental to her list of skills.  

    Maria enjoys spending time outdoors from camping in the woods to hiking to the top of a mountain and beachcombing with her 2 dogs. Maria also loves to solo-travel internationally and experience new places, cultures, and food!
